FOUR THINGS NEW TRAVELERS NEED TO KNOW

Traveling is an art. You start out by picking out a flight, hotel, and building an itinerary. What most people don’t figure out until it’s too late is that travel can also be cheap. It’s 2018, there are tools in place to help you figure out what the best budget friendly option for you is.

Now don’t get me wrong travel can be cheap but of course the word “cheap” is relative and the more traveling you do the more you realize that cheap does not equal $1 burger from McDonald’s cheap. Travel takes effort but with these next few tips you can sustain a travel lifestyle that works within your budget. So here we go.

Treat travel like a bill.

This is my BIGGEST and FIRST advice. If you don’t treat travel like a bill, you aren’t going to make travel happen. The moment we tell ourselves that travel is something we HAVE to do not something we WISH to do – it becomes more real. Every time you get paid put a certain amount away for your next trip (even if you have no idea where to go next or even have a trip planned) just put it away. When the time comes that you have a couple of days off or want to use some PTO the funds will be there and you will not be scrambling around to work extra hours or to cut back on your weekly or monthly expenses to make the trip happen.

Use Apps.

Long gone are the days where people book straight from the airlines website (unless you have racked up a million points). Use apps and websites that help you find the cheapest trip and route. My personal favorites are Skyscanner, Hopper, and Google Flights(tip: go wherever is cheapest first. if you have a specific place you want to go, go when it’s the low season for them). Hotel Tonightis also a life saver when looking for hotel rooms at a reasonable price. The way that this app works is it lists last minute cancellations at almost half the price of a normal night stay. So you are able to stay at nicer hotels for the price of a one or two star hotel – TALK ABOUT A DEAL. As always Airbnb will never fail you, Airbnb has up’ed it’s game in the past couple of years and now offers some really dope stays so shop around.

Travel don’t Vacation.

So this may sound confusing to some but hear me out. If you want to incorporate more travel into your lifestyle don’t splurge on any and everything you see. Have boundaries. Set up a budget like the one you have at home. Don’t go crazy. When you do this you will see that you end up not spending too much money while your away and thus will allow you to book another trip that much faster. For example if you’re traveling for 4 days, cook for the first two and then eat out for the last 2. It’s called balance and being kind to your pockets.

Groupon is a life saver.

There are ENDLESS activities on Groupon. From food tours, bar crawls, foot massages, flights, trip packages, etc. – you name it. Never underestimate a good bargain hunt on Groupon. Once again if you are new to traveling and want to do more of it throughout the year go on Groupon to scout out deals on day activities for your next trip.

FOUR THINGS NEW TRAVELERS NEED TO KNOW

I hope this gets you excited to book your first trip and gives you ideas on how to make your money last longer. The most important part of wanting to travel more is understanding that you do not need more money you just need to figure out how to stretch the money you already have. So go book your next flight and have fun!
