Once you graduate college, it is one of the happiest moments of your life. You’re literally on cloud nine, and you are ecstatic about the future.
You accomplished something incredible; you earned your degree! Celebrate!
Now, I graduated college and got a job within thirty days. However, no, it was not my dream job. My dream job, I realized was (still is) blogging, but I needed an income (that’s how I felt).
Enjoy graduation and make a plan for afterwards.
Here are 5 Things to do After Graduation
Relax and take a deep breath
I know that may sound lame and crazy, but you just spent a few years (and a lot of dime) working your booty off to get that piece of paper. You deserve a slight break. Life after graduation is the perfect time to relax and figure out exactly what you want and how you want to get there. You have the rest of your life to work, so take your time. The Lala also has a great article about what to do after college. You do not need to hurry and get a job. That is one thing I regret.
I love notebooks, pens, and notes. So, I am constantly thinking of ideas, daydreaming, and trying to figure out my next move. Brainstorming is not childish and can indeed help you on your journey to success. Having your goals written down can help you get to your dreams faster simply because you can see them.
When I say makeover, I am not talking about makeup. Although, I may write a new article on makeup after college. Two things I made sure to do after college were revamped my resume and LinkedIn profile. Your resume is the first impression that any future employer has. Don’t be boring. A lot of people have the misconception that resumes can only be black and white, THAT IS NOT TRUE. Even though your resume does not need to be black and white, doesn’t mean it needs to be busy. I have few resumes. Each resume is for a different position. For example, if I am applying for an exciting job in marketing or even sales (depending what type of sales) I want the resume to reflect my personality not only in words but visually. Your LinkedIn profile is key to professional networking. You need to maintain an active presence on the site. Your profile photo needs to be professional and not like an Instagram photo, learn the difference. Personal opinions or political views also should not be shown on LinkedIn, remember it is a professional networking site. Jobs recruiters will find you via LinkedIn, and you can also find employment in the same location. There is a great read on social media and it’s importance in a previous post.
You need to save your money because I hate to say this, but student loans start up six months after you graduate. You’ll have to pay monthly payments, so I recommended the first six months after you graduate you SAVE SAVE SAVE. When I got my job after college, I saved half of every check to help increase my savings and pay my loans.
I wish I interned after college and worked part time. If I could do it over knowing then what I know now, I would be a different person. However, I am a firm believer of everything happens for a reason, and maybe I was supposed to be able to teach others the dos and don’ts. Most employers want (a ton of) experience when you graduate, so getting an internship and gaining more knowledge and expertise is a very good idea. I can’t stress enough the importance of experience.
