Who knew that social media marketing would be the way of 2019. Everyone and every company/business is using Instagram to grow their brand and promote their products and who can blame them? There are 1 billion users on Instagram in the WORLD. So, just capturing a fraction of those people will be incredible! However, with so many users and the algorithm frequently changing you have to be “presentable” and stand put to survive on Instagram. Creating an Instagram theme is critical to growing your brand whether you’re a blogger, influencer, or business owner.
So, if you are anything like me…I struggled for the longest figuring out my theme, colors, and content. Plus, I was always comparing my page, photos, edits, and engagement to others (sometimes, I still do). You always hear about people saying to be authentic on Instagram and honestly, with this strong platform you may get lost in being your true self.
“Most bloggers who rise above the clutter are quite often prolific –they work hard, not just writing content but networking, engaging in Social Media and more.”
Darren Rowse, problogger.net
Growing your brand and creating a successful Instagram theme does take time, patience, hard work, and dedication. So, if you want to build your Instagram brand/business, it will not happen overnight. However, consistency, an Instagram theme, engagement, and mastering the algorithm will get you far.
So, let’s discuss how to create your Instagram theme! As I said, I struggled with this for the longest and just recently got comfortable with my whole Instagram, so I knew I had to share with my virtual friends.
Create your IG bio
Remember, this is the first impression (well one of the first) that people will see when they go to your profile, so you need to make sure it explains who you are. It is like your elevator speech for social media.
Wait, have you heard of an elevator speech? Well, the definition is below for you:
“Elevator pitch is a slang term used to describe a brief speech that outlines an idea for a product, service or project. The name comes from the notion that the speech should be delivered in the short time period of an elevator ride, usually 20-60 seconds.” – Investopedia
Ok, now that we got that out of the way and you have an understanding on what an elevator pitch is let’s focus on creating that the elevator pitch (bio) on Instagram.
First, of course, your name. Not your @name, but the name that you are going by on the gram. For instance, my @name is @imterrah, and my name on Instagram is Terrah LP | LifeStyle Blogger. Now, I know you are wondering why I have the “LifeStyle Blogger” in my IG name, but that’s so if someone does search Lifestyle Blogger there is a possibility that I will show and whoever searching knows what I do instantly.
In your bio, I ALWAYS recommend putting your location (or what city you’re based out of). You may probably do this, or you may be hesitant to do so because it is the internet. Well, let me explain to you why it is important.
Brands/companies/communities will try to reach out to you when they find out you are local. For instance, the small but chic boutique downtown can be searching for bloggers/influencers. However, they want to find someone local. If you mention the city you are based in in your bio they will contact asking for partnerships (if interested. See why it is important?
Next, what do you do? Hopefully, you are actually saying something about yourself and your blog/business. Are you a CEO, businesswoman, freelancer, photographer, blogger, or whatever it is you do? If so, put that in your bio! Let people know who you are and what you can do. That can generate a new lead and/or connection.
What is your CTA? CTA is a call to action, and that should be in your bio. What do you want your followers to do once they get on your page? Read your latest blog by clicking on the link (in your bio)? Check out your newest YouTube video? Whatever it is that you want your followers/visitors to do, tell them! Sometimes people want a little direction.
How will you EDIT your photos
Photo editing is a significant part of your Instagram theme. The difference between an un-edited photo and an edited photo can truly be night and day.
My advice is to find one way to edit your photos and do it consistently on all of your photos. Once I finally decided to do that OMG that was an absolute gamechanger, and I saw more of a cohesive theme.
Once you continue with the same editing and style on your Instagram page that is where your theme begins, I guess you can look at your Instagram profile as your portfolio. It shows your creativity, modeling capabilities, and photography skills. Businesses and brands immediately look towards your photos to know if you are someone they may consider working with.
My number one favorite photo editor is Lightroom, and I pay a monthly fee for it. I’ve tried numerous photo editing APPS, and Lightroom (for mobile and/or desktop) is the best.
If I had to choose my second choice, especially if you are looking for something on the free side is VSCO (Cam)
CAPTIONS are IMPORTANT
So, this is my LAST point for you all because I do not want to make this too long for you all to read!
Your caption is indeed essential. I do not think you always need to have a long caption, but I do believe that you should have either informative or engaging captions. THIS IS WHY people (brands, businesses) want to know your KPI on Instagram.
- Are people engaging in on your post?
- Do you receive comments?
- Are people answering your questions?
I hope you all found this post informative!
On a later date, I will talk to you all about finding your audience on Instagram. Stay tuned on my Instagram and Blog.
