I am only 23, so no I haven’t been interviewing for ten years. However, I am the most confident I have ever been when it comes to interviews. Yes, I still get nervous as heck, but if you are not nervous for an interview, it is not the job for you.
I’ve realized the interview process is changing to more behavioral questions and I honestly think that is amazing! Keep in mind that interviews will be different based on the position you are applying for, the qualifications the job prefers, the requirements of the job title, etc.
Remember, if you are graduating soon, do not feel the rush to go on the interview. I have a fantastic article you can read to know life after graduation. THERE IS NO RUSH!
Let’s talk about How to Prepare for an Interview!
What to wear:
Dress for the part you want. That is key. If you are going to an interview to work for a fashion boutique or fashion editor, you know you need to dress fashionably up to date and in style for that interview. You would not come in a plain suit or sweats, because how are you showing that potential employer that you are fit for that position (or even knowledgeable about fashion) if you are not dressed appropriately. If you are applying for a director for a hotel, you will make sure to have a blazer and have a fantastic suit, or if you are a woman, a dress or skirt and blouse (with blazer), is also acceptable.
See where I am going with this? Don’t worry, if you are unsure what to wear go to Pinterest or even google and search the job title and what they wear. You will find plenty of examples.
Go to the companies website. Read their About Me, Mission Statement, and their Services
Check out their Social Media Pages (that is key to do, depending on what position you are applying for)
Go to Glassdoor and see what others are saying about working for the company
See the salary of someone in that same position.
Write down what you could do for them (ways you can help them improve)
Look up possible interview questions and draft your answers (so you are prepared)
If you are unprepared for your interview, the company will know.
Resume and Cover Letter:
Obviously, you are aware resumes are beyond important. You always have to bring a hard copy of your resume to the interview, and I carry a notebook, pen, to take notes of our conversation. That is always ok to do! Erica, Coming up Roses has an amazing post about the Perfect Resume, and I recommend reading it. A killer resume and a beautiful (with words) cover letter are the best way to go.
QUESTIONS! I never knew the importance of this (to its full extent) until I met with a CEO. We talked resumes and interviews; he told me you always ask questions when the interviewer asks “Do you have any questions?” Now, I knew it was “important,” but I did not know it was important (that makes sense in my head lol). I know it is so hard to figure out what to ask, because either they answered the questions, you have so much going on in the head, or everything is overwhelming. Make a list of questions before the interview and even during the interview come up with new questions. Asking questions could set you apart from other candidates. Plus it shows that you are interested!
